Summer Enrichment Programs from the Office of Talent Development at Ingham ISD are now taking applications. MASCOT, Dimensions, and Kids' College are all currently open for those students that meet the program requirements. Enrichment Offerings - 2011-2012
CHAMP
The Cooperative Highly Accelerated Mathematics Program is a two year program which allows students to complete four years of high school mathematics in two years. Courses include Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Algebra 3/Trigonometry. Most students who complete CHAMP are ready for AP Calculus in their high schools or college level (Honors) calculus at Michigan State University or Lansing Community College. The CHAMP program is designed for students in grades 7-10.
Dimensions
Dimensions is a two-week non-residential program designed to give high-ability students an opportunity to study in an university setting with peers who have been identified as having similar abilities. Students will participate in two academic classes and one special area class. Dimensions is designed for students in grades 7 and 8.
Girls Math/Science Conference
The Girls Math/Science Conference is a day long program designed to expose female students in grade 6 to adult role models in careers utilizing math and science as well as different hands-on activities in both topic areas. Participants should have an interest in the areas of science and mathematics and be recommended by their teacher, counselor, principal, or parent.
High Achievers
High Achievers is a program for academically talented students currently in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 who are seeking to earn college credit while still in high school. Those enrolled in this program will complete an honors-level college course at MSU in 4 weeks during the early summer and earn transfer credit. Students can choose from courses in Biotechnology, Economics, Philosophy, English, and Psychology. Courses will be taught by top MSU faculty who are widely respected teachers and researchers in their respective fields, and students will use MSU's advanced learning technologies in their course work.
Kids' College
Kids' College, conducted at Michigan State University, is an interdisciplinary approach to studying science and technology. It is a two-week, half-day summer experience for students in grades 4 and 5. This program runs from July 9 to July 20, 2012.
MASCOT
The Mathematics Augmentation Series: Cultivating Optimum Teaching and Learning by: Improving Techniques, Using Technology, and Teaming Students, Teachers and Counselors is a two-phase program: (1) An Instructional Improvement Clinic for teachers and counselors; (2) A three-week summer experience for students to receive intensive instruction in math using new techniques and technology. The MASCOT program is designed for students in grade 6.
MST @ MSU
Mathematics Science and Technology (MST) @ MSU is a two-week residential program for academically talented students who have completed grades 7, 8, or 9 during the 2011-2012 school year and a minimum age of 12 years old. The focus is on mathematics, science, and technology and applications in these areas. The goal is to match the intellectual ability of talented adolescents with rigorous and challenging course work which provides enrichment, but does not duplicate or accelerate course work that is part of the regular K-12 curriculum.
Saturday School
The Saturday School enrichment courses include: Science Wizards, Imagination Art, Shake, Rattle & Roll - Geology, CSI: The GATE Detectives are on the Case!, Yo-Ho Yo-Ho A Pirates Life for Me!, P-O-W P-O-W Power - It's Electric, Painting Extravaganza, Dazzling Web Page Design, SCOPE IT OUT! - Microbiology, Behind the Foot Lights!, Let's Act Up!, Science Wizards - ADVANCED, Creepy Crawlies - Spring Edition, Math Marauders, The SKY is FALLING! - Meterology, SMART Art, Come Fly with Me! - Aeronautics & Rocketry, How do you fit in your GENES?, and Digital Cartooning. The Saturday School program is designed for students in grades 2-8.
Science and Math Elementary Exploration (SMEE - formerly Elementary Science Olympiad)
SMEE is open to all elementary age children in the tri-county area: Clinton, Eaton, and Igham counties. SMEE is a day for the children of LCC's community to come to the campus and experience hands-on science and math activities. All events are non-competitive with an emphasis on learning. We offer activities ranging from eye dissection to making and learning about spirals. Faculty and students (elementary education majors) will be running the day's events.
